YouTube Screen Time Limits for Kids on iPhone and iPad

To limit all YouTube viewing on a child's iPhone or iPad, start with Apple's controls for the device. If your child uses YouTube Kids, its timer can end an individual session. Check browser access separately, because restricting an app does not prove that the website is restricted too.

YouTube's supervised Shorts limit is useful for the Shorts feed, but it is not a daily limit on all YouTube videos. If Shorts are your only concern, use our separate Shorts guide.

Find every place your child watches

Before setting a limit, make a quick list with your child.

Keep this list narrow and practical. You are trying to find the family's actual setup, not invent every possible workaround.

Google Family Link can manage aspects of a child's Google account, including YouTube settings. However, its device screen-time limits and app blocking do not work on an iPhone or iPad. Set an Apple allowance for YouTube

Use the child's own Apple Account in your Family Sharing setup, and make changes from the parent or guardian account that manages the child. Check the software version first: Apple introduced different Screen Time menus in version 27.

Version 27: Time Allowances

First complete Apple's family controls upgrade. After updating all eligible family devices, open Settings → Family → Get Started to transfer or set up the new controls. Updating the operating system alone does not finish that step. Devices that cannot update retain their earlier Screen Time settings; review them under View Family Devices. On the parent's device, open Settings → Family → your child → Time Allowances → Add. Follow the options to select the apps or categories you intend to limit. Include YouTube Kids if that is also part of your rule.

For a complete app block, use Apps & Websites, choose the app, and select Block App. Recurring periods are managed through Screen Time Schedule. Apple's current child controls.

Apple also says a time allowance can cover an app's associated website if the app declares that association. Don't assume that condition is met for your child's viewing setup; test it. Apple's allowance requirements.

Version 26: App Limits

Open Settings → Screen Time → your child → App Limits → Add Limit. Expand the app category, select YouTube, choose Next, and set the allowance.

Several apps selected within one limit share its time. Decide whether regular YouTube and YouTube Kids should share a viewing budget or have separate rules. Review Always Allowed, Downtime, and the Screen Time passcode before testing enforcement. Apple's version 26 App Limits guide.

A school video and an entertainment video inside the same app may look the same to an app-level time limit. If homework requires YouTube, agree on a specific adult-approved exception. Calling the whole app “educational” would leave the rest of it available too.

Use the timer in YouTube Kids

For a session that should end after a set duration:

1. Open Settings in the corner of YouTube Kids.
2. Complete the parent check or enter your custom passcode.
3. Select Set timer.
4. Set the duration and choose Start timer.

YouTube Kids displays a time-is-up message and stops access when the timer ends. An adult can return through the parent check to change or stop it. A custom passcode is worth using if your child can solve the default multiplication question. YouTube Kids timer instructions.

This is a session timer. If an adult starts another session, that is another family decision; the timer is not automatically your household's total daily video budget.

Choose content separately from time

YouTube Kids also lets you select Approve content yourself. In the Kids app, open settings, complete the parent check, select the child's profile, enter the parent account password, then use Edit settings. This mode limits viewing to the content you approve and removes the child's search option. YouTube Kids content controls.

Selecting content does not set a viewing duration. Set those two parts of the plan separately: what is available, and when viewing ends.

Check YouTube in Safari and other browsers

If you intend to keep the YouTube website unavailable, add a website restriction as well as reviewing the app rule.

With the upgraded version 27 controls: go to Settings → Family → your child → Apps & Websites, select the website, and use Block Website. With version 26: go to Settings → Screen Time → your child → Content & Privacy Restrictions and turn those restrictions on. Open App Store, Media, Web, & Games → Web Content → Limit Adult Websites, then use Add Website under Never Allow. Enter the YouTube website address you want to block. Try the exact link your child normally opens. Check a direct video link as well as the homepage, and repeat in the browser they actually use. A blocked homepage is not enough evidence to claim that every embedded player, alternate address, or separate device is covered.

Run a short check together

Choose a quiet moment and temporarily use a short allowance if that helps you see the result. This is a suggested check for your family; we have not tested your devices.

Restore the normal allowance afterward. Keep the result simple: the device and account checked, what you tried, and what happened.

If your family uses YouTube on a TV, its Parent code can restrict signed-out viewing and access to older household members' accounts. It is a TV-specific setting, not something that configures every signed-in device. YouTube's TV Parent code documentation.

When learning before viewing is part of the plan

A family might decide that a short learning activity comes before entertainment, while keeping an overall limit on viewing. OMO Kids describes educational quizzes followed by temporary access to selected apps and automatic re-locking. Its exact access window and behavior should be checked in the version installed on your child's device. It should not be treated as proof that all browser viewing is covered. To use that setup, plan for supported parent and child Apple devices with OMO on both, a separate eligible child Apple Account in the same Family Sharing group, Parent and Child roles selected in OMO on the respective devices, and Family Controls approval on the child's device.
